Zoran Music

The solo exhibition by the Slovene painter and graphic artist Zoran Music, which features paintings created by the artist between the 1960s and 1980s, brings together several series of works he has repeatedly created. The exhibition coincides with a major retrospective at the Palazzo Attems-Petzenstein in his hometown of Gorizia, marking the 20th anniversary of his death.

His art conveys themes of suffering and pain, but always with a positive tone of survival and hope. In the crucible of personal trauma and historical disaster, there is perseverance and rebirth, even in the afterlife. He does not shy away from that horror, instead transforming it into art that showcases the tenacity and quiet resilience of the human spirit. His work represents a timeless exploration of recurring themes: landscapes, nudes, botanical motifs, churches, and self-portraits. He turned to silence and meditation, translating them into painting. His poetic artwork is characterized by a suggestive and restrained use of color, and his style incorporates abstract elements.

Typical of the work, muted colours create blurred yet clear outlines, contrasting with the bright colours of the sunlit exterior walls. The vivid colors, including Umbrian earth tones, lavender, ochre, blue, green, and pink, are comparable to the palette of Gustav Klimt. The extremely delicate brushstrokes have an unusually light and rhythmic texture. One might think of them as abstract works, but they are essentially poetic depictions of the geography of Byzantium, Dalmatia, and Italy. They are described as visions of another world, echoing recurring themes of loneliness, spirituality, and silence.
