Stephen Thorpe: Enter The Forest at The Darkest Point

Enter The Forest at The Darkest Point is a solo exhibition by the UK-born, US-based artist Stephen Thorpe, the tilted of the exhibition is taken from a quote by American mythologist and author Joseph Campbell who urges us to "enter the forest in the darkest place, where there is no path". In doing so, we find the path that American poet Robert Frost called: “less travelled we learn to find our truest selves through a constant process of internal death and rebirth”.

An artist's home interior design can be considered the stage for the drama in our minds. In this exhibition, however, he draws on the drama and allure of the forest, a place that has long been synonymous with our need to overcome and win in the face of our imagination or other opposing forces. The challenge is to master ourselves and defeat the malevolent forces within us. By doing this, we seize the opportunity to be who we truly are. In these works, the artist recalls the ancient Mesopotamian legend, the Epic of Gilgamesh (c. 2700 BC), a seminal work in the tradition of heroic sagas.
