Sheila Hicks: Infinite Potential

Infinite Potential is a solo exhibition by the American artist Sheila Hicks, which showcases a series of new works from a diverse range of works that make up her rich vocabulary.

Talking sticks, vines, bas-reliefs, wrapped panels, constellations, orbs, and comets will burst with color in the continued presence of her Minimes – crafted on repurposed frame-repurposed looms since the 1950s small-scale knitting. These metaphorical diaries of the artist's adventures often incorporate evocative found objects, including feathers, shells, stones, bones, and razor clams into soft and pliable backgrounds of cotton, linen, silk, and wool.

The artist’s desire and curiosity for innovation and risk-taking allow her to continue to elevate our perceptions of humble materials as she places them center stage. By introducing and adapting new materials such as banana fiber, stainless steel, and pigmented acrylic, she continues to explore the joy and potential of color while expanding our experience of sculptural possibilities. Environmental responsibility is part of her methodology; the recycling of materials and packaging goes hand in hand with the work of change and metamorphosis from one space to another. Her work is intended to ‘penetrate time and space’ and ‘remain open-ended’.
