On Kawai’s: Rules of Freedom: Freedom of Rules

Rules of Freedom: Freedom of Rules is a solo exhibition by the Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara, presenting the artist’s most representative series of works spanning five decades of creation. These works, represented by his famous "Date Paintings", fundamentally reshape our understanding of time and existence with his unique systematic approach.

The core of his practice lies in the constant search for a balance between self-imposed creative rules and life experience. His works transform daily records into profound reflections on time, existence, and being, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries and reflecting universally on the human condition.

This exhibition will explore how his work connects the everyday and the metaphysical, the simple and the complex, the present and the eternal, as a global citizen and artist-philosopher. His minimalist yet meaningful practice captures a common paradox in today's globalized world: finding stability in perpetual motion. Translating these seemingly mundane, everyday actions into an artistic language that transcends time and has profound meaning, his systematic documentation of existence began before the age of digital sharing, using the communications technology of the time —postcards, telegrams, calendars, and CDs, to mark his presence and connect with others in ways that are still astonishingly meaningful today.
