Maeve Brennan: Records
Records is a solo exhibition by the UK–based artist Maeve Brennan @maevekrbrennan, which blends investigative rigour with poetic storytelling, and the legacy of stolen artifacts and underground economies is explored. Her work has exposed the illicit trade in antiquities, revealing stories and knowledge often overlooked within vast histories and complex systems.
The exhibition brings together a range of artworks, including moving images, sculptures, and prints. Her practice focuses on the study of ambiguous material histories, hidden knowledge, and underground economies. She works closely with her subjects, drawing on keen observation, personal connections, and long-term collaborations while grappling with complex systems and structures.
Taking the viewer on a unique journey, the film initially delves into the impact of illegal archaeological excavations on the landscape and communities of Puglia. It gradually transitions into a rich and detailed exploration of the region, moving beyond archaeology to offer extensive local knowledge and a profound understanding of the land. Furthermore, Hong Kong's enduring role as a global trade hub sets the stage for her examination of cultural ownership and contested historical narratives, encouraging viewers to reflect on the social and political implications associated with objects and their contexts. These narratives unveil the intricate histories of artifacts seized by thieves, while also subtly alluding to the untold stories lost in the process.
