Li Hei-Di: Tongues of Flare
Tongues of Flare is a solo exhibition of new paintings and sculpture by the London-based Mainland Chinese artist Li Hei-Di @plum_black_field, which focuses on 11 new, never-before-exhibited paintings created by the artist in 2025, that explore practices of self-discovery and physical and spiritual transformation, imagining the body as an architecture of energy and emotion, a space where chaos, love, passion, and other phenomena converge and collide.
The layered compositions of her work, in which spectral graphics reveal and conceal at different moments, reflect the complexity of the self and the conflict between our inner self and the forces of the external world. This series of paintings is the most fragile and diaristic work she has created to date. Elsewhere, his new wood sculpture depicts an abstract body, resting quietly in a cradle-like container, reflecting the state of the body and mind during nighttime sleep, sinking deeper and deeper into the ever-changing world of the subconscious.
The artist continues to draw inspiration from the natural world, particularly the flow and fluctuation of water, as a metaphor for the process of self-evolution. In saturated colors, wild, abstract images oscillate and rise and fall on the canvas with an ocean-like rhythm, rising and falling with every stroke of the brush, like the previous works, also draws inspiration from various literary works. Her paintings and sculptures take viewers into a realm where the boundaries between life and death, beauty and struggle, imagination and reality are breached.
