Kylie Manning: Sea Change

Sea Change is a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by the Brooklyn-based artist Kylie Manning, which explores the expressions of movement and accumulation related to luminosity and abstraction.

Deeply influenced by her childhood experiences living in Alaska and Mexico, her work places genderless, anonymous, ghostly figures within vast landscapes, capturing the light and environment specific to these locations. Her dramatic, stage-like compositions, in which entangled bodies move through dreamlike spaces, are reminiscent of the grand 19th-century history paintings of Winslow Homer and Gustave Courbet.

Using pigments and painting techniques used by ancient masters such as Johannes Vermeer, layers of oil are applied to the canvas, creating a radiant, vibrant effect that appears to refract light across the surface of her works. Immersed in ballet rehearsals, pieces investigated how a single mark could suggest rhythm, vibration, and perspective, creating a balance between suggestion and movement. Her rapid brushstrokes suggest push and pull, in which abstract elements that coalesce into images threaten to obliterate the narrative scenes they constitute. Most interested in capturing these unstable, subtly cohesive moments on canvas, where abstraction is formed from the image in motion and vice versa. The new works are filled with deformed bodies and forms that appear to be in a constant state of flux.
