Jakkai Siributr: Outworn

Outworn is a solo exhibition by Southeast Asia's leading contemporary artist Jakkai Siributr, in conjunction with his first major survey exhibition titled Jakkai Siributr: Everybody Wanna Be Happy at CHAT/The Mills (the Centre for Heritage, Arts, and Textile) in Hong Kong.

Known for his intricate tapestries and installations, he weaves personal stories through sewing, embroidery, and community-based collaborative projects that arise from religious and social conflicts, the human condition, and the diaspora across Southeast Asia. Presenting a new series of 5 tapestry installations, each stitched from uniforms collected by Thai service industry workers, reflecting the artist’s perspective on the authorities’ handling of the pandemic.

Clothing has long been a central medium for the artist, often using police and military uniforms as a means of expressing unspoken political and social issues. As he reflects, “A textile can be anything. It doesn’t always have to be a two-dimensional wall hanging. It can be decorative or conceptual. The artist links the dense, detailed hand-stitching and meditative practices of his work to traditional Thai craft processes to comment on contemporary social and political issues.
