Eddie Martinez: Supernature

Supernature is a solo exhibition by the Brooklyn-based artist Eddie Martinez, which draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from pop culture to Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism.

The artist's work combines painting and drawing, abstraction and representation in unconventional ways. Imbued with a sense of personal imagery, his practice often incorporates signature figurative elements such as large-eyed figures and eclectic headgear with gestures and abstract color blocks. His paintings are vibrant and original, with bold use of color and texture on canvas and various combinations of oil paint, enamel, spray paint, and collage elements.

In the exhibition, the Raid itself becomes a ghostly insect, or a soldier in a gas mask, standing in his iconic still life filled with poisonous cartoon flowers and bulbous mushrooms. The supernatural is equally reminiscent of something like Christopher Wool or Carroll Dunham, of Audrey II, the carnivorous flowers in The Little Shop of Horrors, the fragile and sensitive lines of Matisse's floral still lifes. With paint pouring from the nozzle, Martinez can make the Raid figure scream or howl like a siren with just a few bold gestures and strokes.
