Cy Gavin

The solo exhibition of the American artist Cy Gavin showcases a series of works with rich brushstrokes that interpret natural spaces and phenomena, echoing the complexity of the forces that shape the landscape.

The paintings depict biological, geological, and cosmic structures, sometimes in bright colors, highlighting themes of growth and transformation. Many of the works use unprimed wood panels as support, with the visible wood grain playing an important compositional role in the unpainted areas. The square format of many of the paintings allows for open-ended visual exploration.

The large-scale paintings he creates echo the scale and context of the works of his nineteenth-century artistic predecessors, who were inspired by the same landscapes. The vividness of his colors, the casualness of his brushstrokes, and the expansiveness of his compositions occasionally evoke associations with specific locations, but often transport the viewer to further, sometimes even more suggestive realms. In his paintings, nature becomes a medium to contemplate a deeper sense of place and connections across time, through forms that resemble leaves, streams, forests, fields, seas, and skies, or alternately merge into pure abstraction. His canvases are profound and subtle meditations on memory and inheritance – even his preference for blue pigment stems from his interest in cultural and scientific history.

Thank you so much for the invitation. Love it so much.
