Xiao Bo

The solo exhibition of contemporary Chinese abstract painter Xiao Bo extended his creative foundation to Hong Kong, continuing to delve deeper into painting's intrinsic nature. The street beneath our feet, within easy reach, represents both a concrete, personal daily experience and an unshakable reality independent of individual will—like a "container" that carries universal reality. In this exhibition, the artist uses highly rational visual language to transform the complementary reflection between "personal experience" and "objective reality" into a quiet dialogue between body, time, and matter.

The artist further refined his signature "four-panel" technique. The canvas is divided into four equal areas, and the artist's body moves between them in a synchronized, repetitive rhythm. The images on the canvas do not originate from a pre-set blueprint, but emerge and unfold naturally with the physical trajectory of the brushstrokes. Synchronization and repetition eliminate narrative expression and emotional interference; the artist deliberately retreats behind a set of rules, placing himself in the position of "object". Between each repeated application and pause of paint, the subtle changes in bodily movement become the sole variable, much like the act of painting itself, ultimately leading to a state of pure introspection. This pursuit of constancy and emptiness transforms the canvas: it is no longer a window to the external world, but an objective record of bodily breathing and the folds of time.

When delicate personal insights solidify within four seemingly constant grids, the painting exudes a tension that transcends visual form. Through the mechanisms of restriction and repetition, the microscopic experience of the body crystallizes into an unshakeable objective fact, a vivid metaphor for our urban life. Each of us navigates solitude and daily routines within specific streets and coordinates, yet we all reside together in a grand, objective reality.
