Wu Jiaru: To the Naiad’s House

To the Naiad's House is a solo exhibition by the Mainland Chinese artist Wu Jiaru, which features a collection of recent sculptures, video works, and paintings incorporating mythology, science fiction, and domestic archaeology elements. "The Naiad's House" is a place featured in the 18th-century novel "Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin" by Cao Xueqin. It was also the name of a room in a restaurant run by her mother called "Jiu Lou" (Ninth Floor), where she spent most of her childhood. Throughout the exhibition, Wu continues to explore decentralized ways of writing and recording history, noting: "I hope to present the possibility of historicizing personal memory.

Wu's work examines cultural exchanges and issues of identity and belonging between mainland China and Hong Kong by revisiting personal memories and adapting to Hong Kong's aesthetics. Through the exhibition, she has constructed a memory palace that not only draws on her own childhood memories, but also reflects the fragmented memories shared by millennials in southern China. She often examines this entangled period of economic development through her analysis of the aesthetics of entertainment complexes and interior decoration.
