Vik Muniz: Surfaces

Surfaces is a solo exhibition of the new works by the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, which explores concepts of perception, reality, representation, and matter, inviting viewers to question what lies beneath the surface, exploring the dichotomy between physical objects and their depictions, they inspire and expand expectations of the visual repertoire.

Based on extensive research into the iconic works of Cubism and 20th-century masters, including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger, and Giorgio Morandi, the artist creates these unique compositions and collage components using a hybrid technique of photographing hand-crafted three-dimensional elements, particularly paintings and reprocessing them through photographic collage.

He has long been fascinated by the revolutionary ways in which Cubism subverted traditional concepts of perspective and perception, bringing touch, feeling, and multidimensionality to a surface, and this collection celebrates their innovation with reverence, playfulness, and contemporary thought. Many of the works in the exhibition pay homage to the Italian artist Morandi's serene series of still-life, which feature pots and vessels arranged in different compositions. The artist truly achieves the volumetric contours of the objects and emphasizes the artist's famous subtle tonal-changing brushstrokes.
