Spencer Finch: Forever is Composed of Nows

Forever is Composed of Nows is a solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Spencer Finch, which showcases the artist's latest works including LED light installations, a range of pastels on paper, watercolors, and pencil-on-paper Pantone swatches. Each work is a conceptually condensed chronicle of a journey or experience, often an interaction between the artist and nature: from studies of the opacity and transparency of clouds to tracing the flight patterns of bees in the garden as they pollinate.

The titles reflect that each work is an observation of a specific moment or event, but together the snapshots create a panoramic whole, each a record of his extraordinary experiments, challenging himself to use a variety of everyday materials and tools.

Inspired by Monet's practice of planting gardens and making his painting intentions clear, Finch's "Following a Bee" (2021) is a series of paintings centered on a large bouquet of zinnia flowers, which the artist grew from seed for this purpose. Perched on a ladder above the flowers, follow the flight pattern of each bee as it cross-pollinates the zinnias, creating a line in acetate that serves as a surreal trace of their journey, and then each zinnia variety was selected and paired with pastel colors.
