Social Abstraction

Social Abstraction is the second installment of a two-part exhibition that features new works by Kevin Beasley, Allana Clarke, Cy Gavin, Alteronce Gumby, Lauren Halsey, Kahlil Robert Irving, Devin B. Johnson, Rick Lowe, Eric N. Mack, Cameron Welch, and Amanda Williams etc, which centers on the experimental approaches taken by generations of black artists who have used abstraction to address culture, perception, and our place in the universe.

Working in a variety of mediums from oil and acrylic paint to ceramics, mosaics, resins, hairspray, wigs, and textiles, they transcend purely formal considerations to engage with themes of identity, sociality and lived experience. These abstract concepts are connected to the roots of Lowe's practice of civic transformation, fueling his thinking on urban geography and public interrelationships.

The work explores identity and beauty standards around black women's hair, consisting of layered synthetic hair in contrasting colors and using abstraction to evoke individuality, beauty, and self-transformation. These paintings' colorful, iridescent surfaces reflect a fascination with natural phenomena, human perception, and art history.
