Ruth Asawa: Doing is Living

Doing is Living is a solo exhibition by the American modernist artist Ruth Asawa, which features works spanning five decades, many of which have never been publicly exhibited before, and embody complementary aspects of her prolific career.

The artist has been steadily making art for more than a half-century, creating a series of sculptures and works on paper that skillfully synthesize various artistic oeuvres through innovative uses of materials and forms. Relentless experimentation in a variety of media, moving effortlessly between abstract and figurative realms in 2 and 3 dimensions, creates a vast and varied body of work that, despite its visual heterogeneity, all reflects her belief in the complete integration of artistic practice and family life.

Known for her numerous wire sculptures, which challenge traditional concepts of material and form by emphasizing lightness and transparency. The sculptures' unique structure was inspired by a 1947 trip to Mexico, where local artisans taught her how to make baskets from wire. A near-constant devotion to creative pursuits and her unique way of seeing the world around her is evidenced in her rarely seen drawings of the details of everyday life.

Thanks for the invitation.
