Pocono Zhao Yu: Pomegranate

Pomegranate is a solo exhibition by the Mainland Chinese artist Pocono Zhao Yu, which inspired by her childhood memories, textual research, and fictional narratives, the exhibition works revolve around the history of pomegranates, the Age of Discovery, and the intertextuality of cultural themes throughout human discovery, that presents the artist’s latest installations, sculptures and paintings, and the story unfolds through three interconnected chapters – “Voyage," "Retrospect," and "Childhood" - depicting the artist's understanding of flow, nostalgia and personal history reflection.

Greeted by the entrance to the exhibition is the sculptural series Explosive Juice of Reef (2023) scattered across the floor, which includes countless mixed-media pomegranate flowers sprouting on dozens of stones made of industrial materials. The organic grows on the inorganic, which is itself a strange visual combination. The work subtly hints at the theme of the first chapter "Voyage": the unknown adventure and the alienated cross-culture that coexist with it.

In the second chapter, "Retrospect" the artist invents a set of quasi-archaeological evidence and artifacts in her work, telling the history of conquest and immigration in a semi-fictional way. Ocean Robe (2023) is a collection of sculptural garments made from printed processed fabrics. Each piece hangs elegantly on a hanger, like a newly unearthed cloak that once belonged to an unknown knight. At the end of the exhibition, the finale "Childhood" took a turning point, leading the narrative of world history to the artist's tracing of personal memories.
