Ngai Wing-lam: No Dreams Can Last Longer Than A Night

No Dreams Can Last Longer Than A Night is a solo exhibition by the local Hong Kong artist Ngai Wing-lam, which showcases her creative practice is mainly based on painting, and her style is influenced by Western landscape paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and John Constable.

The works mostly apply oil paint directly onto wooden boards cut or framed into different shapes and are presented as storyboards separated by specially designed wooden frames. The artist used wooden frames as storyboard dividers, establishing narrative perspective and then contrasting the two landscapes with each other. The installation is inspired by medieval religious paintings, with the frame being part of the painting's content and filled with hidden symbols and allegories.

The artist paints on surfaces of specific shapes and forms, creating a narrative sequence and overview; at the same time, the frames of different shapes also have a decorative function and form a connection with the domestic space setting. Childhood toys such as pop-up books, cardboard houses, paper dolls, toy furniture, and old televisions also provide the artist with references for narrative background. In painting, one's imagination has no limits, even though one may get lost by being too free, or become too artificial by being obsessed with details.
