Mark Bradford: Exotica

Exotica is a solo exhibition of new, formally innovative works by the American visual artist Mark Bradford, which features the artist's most recent formal and thematic investigations while pushing his practice into new inventions. The exhibition explores the lasting impact of colonialism and the concept of "otherness" through personal experience.

Introducing a signature dyeing technique, the artist used caulk to create shadow-like imprints on the canvas. These forms infuse Bradford's layered compositions with a hint of fantasy, strangeness, and memory.

The exhibition's diversity of forms and materials including works created with fabric dyes, inked paper, and oxidized paper reflects his ongoing evolution in form. The artist used a 1968 encyclopedia that cataloged exotic plants from a Western perspective for Western readers. Using this catalog as a starting point, he considers how we create, imagine, and internalize these "exotic" concepts, looking inward at his preconceptions of what things are and how these preconceptions define his reality and experience.

Thanks for the invitation.
