Juri Markkula: Heavens

Heavens is a solo show by the Finnish artist Juri Markkula, which showcases new pieces from his Paradise series, wall-mounted sculptures of industrial weight and overwhelming ethereal beauty. Each sculpture has a color title. Yet each defies color classification and is inspired and guided by experience and instinct.

The artist draws inspiration from the Swedish concept of "himel" and the Finnish concept of "taivas". Each word has a dual meaning, referring both to heaven in the eternal afterlife and to the atmosphere and sky above us. As such, this collection embodies both the physical and spiritual realms. It is a process that brings together industry and chemistry, and the results are both spiritual and material.

The series turns the viewer's gaze to the sky. Heaven glows in iridescent hues, absorbing and reflecting at the same time. It both reflects and transcends reality, forming contrasts and alliances of tones and shadows, generating spontaneous responses to the coexisting forces of light, mood, and perception. Like diamonds, available in carats and facets, these surfaces rise to intensely satisfy the needs of the eye and soul respectively.
