Joel Shapiro

The American sculptor Joel Shapiro's solo exhibition showcases his work that examines his practice from the 1990s to the present day, which brings together a variety of wood and bronze sculptures, highlighting gravity, mass, and form in the artist's work over the past 30 years.

The artist has always had a keen interest in exploring even an ordinarily erasing sometimes, the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, and has also been preoccupied with how sculpture engages and activates landscape and architecture. By utilizing various materials and programs throughout his career, Shapiro has continually explored sculpture's ability to transform one's sense of space, scale, and body.

The exhibition will begin with two sculptures by Shapiro from the 1990s, including a large bronze sculpture from 1994-95 that draws attention to the floor, and a sculpture composed of two intertwined figures composed of subtle wood carvings, attracting attention. The viewer's gaze is directed upwards toward the walls of the room. Meanwhile, a newer, partly painted wood sculpture appears frozen in the middle of the space.
