Isa Genzken

Isa Genzken is a solo exhibition showcasing the important works of her career in the past 10 years, that explores the constantly changing boundaries between art, design, architecture, technology, and the individual.

The selection on display will include her recent "tower" and "column" sculpture installations. These works stem from the artist's fascination with architecture and city skylines for decades. These architectural forms are both temporary and monumental, consisting of a vertical structure of medium-density fiberboard, decorated with mirror foil, spray paint, and other media, complicating the distinction between surface and depth, and the distinction between interior and exterior spaces. Combining the history of modernist architecture and sculpture, the towers and columns are physically impressive, but the materials and their human-scale hint at the inherent fragility of the modern architectural environment.

In the artist’s career spanning more than 40 years, her amazing creations often contain seemingly unrelated materials and images. These complex and mysterious works cover a variety of media, including sculpture, painting, collage, film, and photography. Her creation is deeply rooted in the tradition of avant-garde art in the 20th century, and in the various materials and forms of the globalized society in the 21st century, questioning the influence of our increasingly commoditized life and culture.
