Chen Yu-fan: Heart of the Matter

Heart of the Matter is a solo exhibition by the Mainland Chinese artist Chen Yu-fan, which showcases different series of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects as well as selected installations, exploring the topic of regional geography and examining how they shape our perception. Inspired by Daoism and Zen Buddhism, his minimalist abstract paintings hovered somewhere between visual art and literature, or at least the appearance of literature.

Bombarded by disparate histories, constant urban development, and often conflicting needs with the surrounding environment, human existence seems increasingly uncertain. The works offer a glimpse into the transformative potential of art, designed to evoke new thoughts and emotions. His 2-dimensional hybrid paintings and installations are formally linked, conveying an adaptable quality and open to different interpretations with their material means.

Through a repetitive process of dots, regular lines, and solid colors, the artist translates Taoist and Zen philosophies into personal interpretations and meditations. The work revolves around the power of optical structure and intention; his unique artistic expression is based on the combination and dispersion of objects and space. Through the surface composed of points and lines and the space composed of surfaces and objects, when these elements are superimposed on each other, a trace of time is released. The dialogue with its medium becomes an important theme, similar to inner meditation, a performance art rooted in concept.
