Brice Guilbert: Ti brule

Ti brulé is a solo exhibition of new paintings by the French artist and musician Brice Guilbert, which showcases 7 large-scale paintings and 1 small-scale work. The title of the exhibition translates as “little burnt” in Réunion Creole refers to the volcanic site of Le Grand Brûlé, located at the foot of the active volcano Fournes on the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

All works in the exhibition are titled "Fournez", named after the local pronunciation of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano in Reunion Island, where the artist grew up from 2 to 14. Working over the past 7 years, he has used differently colored oil sticks on wood to create layered gestural marks that imbue each semi-abstract rendering of the volcano with a different mood and resonance.

The artist's practice spans painting, drawing, and music, with an interest in recurring visual themes that produce rhythmic, melodic effects. His Creole roots and childhood in Reunion are the inspiration for his paintings and musical compositions, which incorporate voice and guitar, giving at the heart of most of his abstract works an ineffable nostalgic quality that challenges any set narrative.

We will always remember you as someone who knows everything about the exhibition. The knowledge and experience that you have gained are amazing. Thank you for showing us around.
