Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato

The solo exhibition of paintings by the Brazilian artist Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, which created a series of unique paintings that focused on his meticulous observations of everyday subjects in his hometown of Belo Horizonte - including favelas, semi-urban landscapes, and agricultural and rural industrial scenes.

Its unique composition is characterized by simplified geometric shapes and densely textured surfaces, which the artist achieved through richly colored homemade paints using brushes, combs, and forks. His canvases are imbued with a sure freedom of expression, deftly capturing the vibrancy of the artist's surroundings and the colors and textures of the natural world. His paintings often use geometric shapes to suggest objects in real space, with visual similarities to the work of Italian-born Brazilian modernist painter Alfredo Volpi, whose St. Paul similarly depicts everyday themes.

Particularly highlighted in this exhibition are the paintings of favelas – the shantytowns of the working class that have become familiar and even typical images of Brazil’s informal urban and rural culture – which together constitute the largest collection of Lorenzato’s portfolio and earned the artist an early reputation. He witnessed firsthand the construction of a slum near his home used to reforest eucalyptus trees; this subject, both architectural and personal, provided the artist with a generative space for formal experimentation.
