Alice Neel: Men from the Sixties
Men from the Sixties is a solo exhibition by the American visual artist Alice Neel, which showcases her significant work depicting men from the 1960s. This decade was so defining in her artistic practice. Over the years, her work had evolved into looser, more open compositions, a style she recognized later in her career when she was already an edgy artist and cultural figure.
Among the works on display are portraits of people close to the artist, including those essential cultural figures around her. She tries to capture the whole of the characters, celebrating their individuality but also their flaws, complexities, and insecurities. One painting in the exhibition depicts her eldest son, Richard. This intimate work was created in 1968, when Richard was 28 years old, just after graduating from Columbia Law School in New York, sitting casually in a T-shirt and underwear. In the painting, Richard looks intently at his mother, with his right leg freely straddling a blue and white striped chair that appears in many other works by the artist, including the famous self-portrait that was created in 1980.
