Yayoi Deki: Minority Flags

Minority Flags is a solo exhibition by the Japanese artist Yayoi Deki, which explores the Flags series, transforming the geometric shapes of various LGBTQ+ pride flags into miniature faces with subtle textures. The resulting work presents a unique juxtaposition of cheerful aesthetics, pointing toward deeper, more complex themes.

This exhibition is a sensory overload. Created using a unique, obsessive finger-print technique, his large-scale paintings are stunning in their detail and scale. On the surface, it exudes a playful "girlish" vibe, but underneath it holds a sinister foreboding that is repetition and lines seem to jump out of the large canvas. Each fingerprint forms a larger, more vibrant, and ever-repeating “face” that weaves together the stories of the individuals that make up the collective.

While brainstorming ideas for an exhibition focused on flags, she conceived the concept of "Flags of Ethnic Minorities." Upon closer inspection of her paintings, viewers may discern miniature panda faces and other creatures subtly tucked within the expansive fingerprint landscapes. The artist aims for viewers to interpret her work freely and individually.
