Szelit Cheung: Dark

Dark is a solo exhibition by the Hong Kong local artist Szelit Cheung, which is bolstered by minimalist interiors, the artist's paintings depict the illumination of a space by a single light source, often through a window, skylight, or opening in the wall.

The artist carefully layered tones of orange, green, and blue to create detailed spatial compositions on the canvas that define darkness and make the viewer aware of it, focusing on light: the fundamental element that makes up the human perception of visual dimensions. The brightness in the work guides the viewer's eyes to identify the structure, while the eternal light in the painting stops the sense of time.

The focus stems from the artist’s constant attempt to capture the essence of the void. The paintings in Darkness change from the past practice of emphasizing the sense of emptiness through complex architectural forms. The compositions are simpler and closer to abstraction. Structural features such as corners, openings, and walls remain. Still, they dissolve into essential forms and fade into complex depths of color, allowing the work to straddle the line between figuration and abstraction. This tranquility - in which the mind finds a comfortable resting place is akin to encountering a sublime state.
