Rirkrit Tiravanija: The Shop
The Shop is an expansive exhibition of new work by the Argentina artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, the primary reference and significant inspiration for the piece comes from the acclaimed science fiction trilogy reminiscing about Earth's past by Chinese author Liu Cixin, one of China's most internationally successful book series.
For this presentation, the artist replicates an umbrella repair shop commonly found in Hong Kong. A full inventory of umbrellas and other elements inspired by real-life umbrellas will be available, continuing his longstanding practice of highlighting and incorporating vernacular objects and forms. Inside the store, a transistor radio will play recordings from the final book in Liu's trilogy, "Death End." In this excerpt, a character tells a series of fables that have several art historical references - notably portraiture and linear perspective. A spinning umbrella, which protects the protagonist of the story from being drawn into the picture, features prominently in three stories.
Other spaces in the exhibition include augmented reality, robotics and other advanced technologies that the artist is increasingly incorporating into his work, resulting in unique experiential environments that engage the viewer's perception of time, space and reality. The store itself also reflects his longstanding interest in places of exchange as spaces for critical reflection on the structures of relationships—from the individual to the community, from the intellectual to the transactional, from leisure to ritual—that define contemporary experience.
