Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is an exhibition of paintings features 9 of his works from the 1870s to the 1910s, including Impressionist landscapes and female figures.

As the founder and leading figure of Impressionism, the artist was instrumental in the group's transition from studio-based traditionalism to art centered on modern life in and around Paris. Working outdoors, the Impressionists recorded their sensory experience, rendering the ephemeral effects of light through staccato brushstrokes of saturated color. Women were a favorite subject throughout his career, from his impressionistic depictions of fashionable Parisian women to his figures in domestic and natural settings in his later years. Beginning in the 1880s, shifting his approach to one inspired by the Old Masters, introducing linear precision, fluid modeling, and more structured compositions in his female figure paintings. During the remainder of his career, he explored the reconciliation of this classical figure approach with the bright palette and loose brushwork of Impressionism, resulting in a new mode of imagery marked by a sensual and innovative modern palette.
