Julie Curtiss: Bitter Apples

Bitter Apples is a solo exhibition by the French artist Julie Curtiss, which features new paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, as well as the artist’s first short film.

Employing clear outlines and saturated colors, her unique stylistic language mines diverse figurative genealogies from 18th- and 19th-century French painting to Japanese woodblock prints and "popular" imagery from manga and illustration. Focusing on the absurdity of life, she creates scenes filled with playful details and visual puns, dripping with deadpan humor, and often erotic overtones.

The largest painting in the exhibition, House of Mirrors (2023), is based on a still from Charlie Chaplin's 1928 film, The Circus, replacing the actor with a female figure standing in a space made of receding, repeating shadows and the center of a confusing maze of reflections. It’s a fair warning to those who like to indulge in a game of confusion and misdirection, of the eye-deceiving and questioning reality, like a surrealist fable that transports the viewer into the dream world of her paintings, instilling a sense of disquiet and strangeness into everyday settings and objects.
