Derrick Adams: Sweet Spot

Sweet Spot is a solo exhibition of seven new paintings by the multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams, which showcase the artist's use of techniques of collage, fragmentation, and formal synthesis to create representations of black joy, leisure, and fantasy, expanding the canon of traditional cultural imagery describing the black experience. Introducing new works from his latest series of film paintings, the exhibition pays homage to black figures and draws inspiration from his personal observations and imagination as well as black films of the 1990s.

Launched in 2020, the Motion Picture Paintings series depicts his family members, peers, acquaintances, and everyday figures in his signature Cubist style, characterized by blocks of color and dimension. As an artist with an established and distinctive visual language, he takes a more liberal approach to these new works, providing an expanded context for the narrative cityscapes that dominate his work. This particular group of paintings Sweet Spot is especially exhibited in Hong Kong because they are distinguished by the tender intimacy and emotional depth they convey.
