De/construct

De/construct is a group exhibition showcasing the works of 3 Asian artists: a famous Japanese second-generation Gutai artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa, a Chinese abstract and minimalist artist Wang Yi, and a Korean artist who captures the essence of time through artistic practice Soonik Kwon.

The artists jointly expressed their unique interpretations of life and Eastern philosophy, including the aura and energy of life. Through unique experiments with artistic practice, gesture, and materiality, they deconstruct conceptual and avant-garde ideas, thus diversifying the ways in which paintings can be read.

Maekawa has used burlap as the primary material for his work throughout his career. Burlap is almost so closely associated with the artist that when we think of Maekawa, there is no doubt that the first thing that comes to mind is burlap. Wang seeks to combine slow and delicate classical painting techniques, standardized production of industrial materials, and modernist design and architectural paradigms into abstract expressions that illustrate social mechanisms and natural elements. Kwon continues the charm and spirit of the Dansaekwa movement in Korea, tirelessly researching and meditating in his brushstrokes with minimalist "dots, lines, and planes", depicting every moment "as it is", including its aura and energy.
