Scott Kahn: Once in a Blue Moon

Once in a Blue Moon is a solo exhibition by the American artist Scott Kahn, which features a series of new paintings focusing on the different types of full moons in the lunar calendar and their myriad connotations as its central compositional element, also features a selection of landscapes from throughout his career, some of which include the moon, often glimpsed in the background, appearing as a sort of foreshadowing of the scene below.

For more than 50 years, the artist has been committed to a figurative form of expression, using a unique formal language to recreate the splendor and mundanity of the world around him in a nuanced and poetic way. In his new work, he deftly plays with the color connotations of this phrase, presenting lunar landscapes that are near replicas of lived experience, but filled with electric colors or ghostly shadows that transport the viewer to another realm.

The exhibition's title is taken from a 2023 painting, "Blue Moon," which features a full moon's silvery orb that appears to be merging with a blue-hued doppelgänger. As a lunar phenomenon, a blue moon refers to the occurrence of 2 full moons in a calendar month, which occurs every 2 to 3 years. The term originates from the sixteenth-century expression "the moon is blue," meaning conveys something so weird that it’s impossible.
