Play and Loop V

Play and Loop V is the fifth iteration of the summer video screening program, that is a unique platform dedicated to showcasing moving images by established and emerging artists, Featured artists include Jiang Zhi, Li Shuang, Jen Liu, Andrew Luk, Angela Su, Xiē, Yan Wai Yi, and Chris Zhongtian Yuan.

The 6 weeks program this year is divided into two themed episodes, each lasting 3 weeks. The gallery space will be divided into screening rooms, each of which will play a film by the artist on a loop. Throughout the event, Angela Su’s This is Not a Game will be on display, along with Andrew Luk's work, including a new sculptural installation Saudade Chandelier and mixed-media works Techno-Reliquary 1, 2.

Luk's Saudade Chandelier (2023) is Hong Kong's spooky cipher because of its unique location. Its coastal location, mountainous vistas, and proximity to water systems form the basis of a cosmology derived from the fundamental rhythms of water, air, and light. The two-meter-tall sculptural installation is an assemblage of upcycled Taobao chandeliers, oyster shells, temple windmills, and ancestral altar light bulbs. The work alludes to Hong Kong's primordial history when coastal and boat people populated the land for fishing, salt mining, and oyster farming. Much later, the colonial occupation transformed Hong Kong from a regional outpost to an international trade center, attracted by the winds and currents of its deep-water port and favorable ocean trade routes.
