Paloma Castillo: Embroidering the Everyday

Embroidering the Everyday is a solo presentation by the Chilean textile artist Paloma Castillo, which represents a selection of her signature stitched canvases, capturing the wonderful fusion of personal and intimate, provocation and pop culture that represent the very essence of her work.

The resulting artwork can be read as a miniature "mind map," combining her observations of daily and political life in Chile with her personal experiences, adding a layer of mythology and a playful sense of humor. Their lives are bustling as superheroes, insects and flowers mingle with biblical figures, everyday objects like power cables, and Chilean icons like maraquita rolls in depictions of spirituality and femininity.

Textile art has traditionally been considered a craft, mainly in the field of women and the home. The artist has mastered a well-established medium that has gained more attention and interest in new, fresher interpretations and has reshaped the world of textiles as a medium as one of artistic expression.
