Oska Gutheil & Rodel Tapaya: A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities is a joint exhibition by the German artist Oska Gutheil the Filipino artist Rodel Tapaya, which created a unique fusion of cultural aesthetics that is bringing together the viewers from different backgrounds and nationalities. It demonstrates how the arts can bridge cultural divides and foster understanding between cultures.

The exhibition highlights Tapaya's signature style of combining traditional Filipino folklore with contemporary issues, as well as Gutheil's attention to his inner world and the complexity of his vision. For Gutheil, her paintings question social norms in society, focusing primarily on the structures we call reality. Sameness, failure, gender clichés and transformation play a defining role in these often biographically inspired works. Her work produces vibrant canvases with bold colors and textures that evoke a sense of movement and energy.

Instead, Tapaya's paintings depict complex narratives inspired by his cultural heritage and personal experiences. His works often incorporate elements of Filipino mythology, folklore, traditional stories, and contemporary social issues, and feature vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and rich layers of symbolism.
