Merrill Wagner: Nature

Nature is a solo exhibition by the American artist Merrill Wagner, which features works from across her career, executed on various traditional and non-traditional supports, from canvas, paper, slate and stone to Plexiglas and steel, it brings together a body of work that explores Wagner's interest in process, opportunity, and continued interest in art.

The artist's creative works emphasize the materiality and mutability of painting, ignoring the traditional categories of painting, relief, sculpture and installation. The artwork draws on the aesthetic styles dominated by Minimalism and Post-Minimalism in the 1960s, eschewing and embracing its primary concerns, creating rigorous, hard-boiled abstract works that subtly reference landscapes.

Rendered on Plexiglas or paper and enhanced with pencil, oil paint, or pastel, giving her work an atmospheric feel, the tape works on display retain Wagner's early emphasis on form but are representative of her practice an important evolution in which process and form become intrinsically linked to the ephemerality of her materials is revealed. Elsewhere, one of the monochromatic, hard-edged paintings from 1966 features a large circle outlined by a thin curve on an even ground. This work can be read simultaneously as a study of color and form as well as a study of the waning moon, introducing from the outset the coexisting dualities of her work.

The opening party was fantastic and delightful. We appreciate the invitation and thank you so much.
