Chiharu Shiota: Untitled 1992

This is Chiharu Shiota’s final oil painting, created during her first year at Kyoto Seika University. Reflecting on her artistic process, she recalls, “I paint abstract art as a means of challenging myself, even if it means having the freedom to choose the subject I want to depict.”

In this painting, viewers may only perceive the surface colors of the canvas, without witnessing the surging passion that exists within the domain of abstract art. While technical proficiency takes precedence, the absence of substance is a frustrating reality. As she works with oil paints and canvas, the artist is simultaneously engaging with the entire history of painting carried within these materials. Through painting, she has discovered an aversion to the superficiality that often accompanies the act of painting.
