Alexandria Smith: Stirrings if a Polymorphous Bloom

Stirrings of a Polymorphous Bloom is a solo exhibition by the American artist Alexandria Smith, which showcases new assemblage paintings and collages on display that explore the fluid nature of self and identity.

Envisioning cosmic environments inhabited by ever-changing characters, the artist's practice is based on her exploratory drawings and is represented by works on paper in custom frames. From this, she develops boldly colored assemblages that incorporate shapes made from painted wood and 3D-printed elements that rise from their surfaces and extend beyond the frame.

The new work focuses on symbols of origin, light, and growth, inspired by her interest in autobiography, fiction, and collective memory. These hybrid figures are varied in color and gender ambiguous, emphasizing features such as eyes, limbs, nipples, kneecaps, and fingernails. They stretch, divide, and multiply, embodying the artist's multifaceted allegory of physical, spiritual, and emotional growth.
