Uncanny Valley

Uncanny Valley is a group exhibition organized by the Beijing-based independent curator Yang Zi, which features new works by Chinese artists Owen Fu, Jiang Cheng, Li Hei Di, Li Weiyi, Nabuqi, Song Yuanyuan, Su Yu-Xin, Wang Haiyang, Wang Xiaoqu, Wang Xingwei, and Zhang Zipiao.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by the "Uncanny Valley" theory proposed by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970. Whereas a humanoid object's greater or lesser resemblance to a real person elicits emotional affinity, a person known for a close but flawed resemblance may instead elicit unease and resentment.

The occurrence of these themes in contemporary paintings, sculptures, and videos by Chinese artists is explored. These works imbue the human figure with psychological, existential, and symbolic meaning, combining a sense of embodied intimacy with a deliberate and concrete lack of cohesion that is unlike most representations of the human figure in art history.
