Sophie Varin: Low Resolution

Low Resolution is a solo exhibition by the French artist Sophie Varin, which features a recent selection of miniature paintings that capture enchanting landscapes and enigmatic figures, as well as two life-size puppet-like sculptures taking viewers on a journey of curiosity and investigation.

This was the debut of a new form of artistic experimentation by the artist, with a series of long horizontal paintings depicting vast landscapes and magical landscapes. These vistas trigger panoramic views from the top of the mountain, inspiring contemplation and reflection. With their elongated forms reminiscent of East Asian handscrolls, these works embrace the aesthetics of landscape painting—rather than creating a focal point, they orchestrate the eye to invite a continuous, linear reading.

Vast landscapes are condensed into relatively small compositions, and the landscapes depicted lose many of their intricate details, resulting in a grainy and slightly rough texture on the canvas, along with subtle low-resolution pixelation that is a symbolic meaning beyond the literal meaning of a pixelated or blurred image. It embraces the concept of modest expectations and departs from higher standards by implying a lack of solutions or results. Wandering between fiction, dreams, and simulacra, it presents a world that is both familiar and unfamiliar. It constructs a space where the boundaries between reality and imagination merge, and the audience becomes an active participant in the generation of meaning.
