Peng Jian: Squaring the Circle

Squaring the Circle is a solo show by the Hangzhou-based artist Peng Jian, which showcases 4 series of paintings that is full of geometric twists and turns, as well as straight lines and curves.

The artist carefully calculates lengths, proportions and angles to create works that exhibit complex balance and the interdependence of objects. Twists and turns are the common denominator in this series, especially the straight and curved lines that dominate each. Harmony expresses the tortuous relationship between recurring objects and images, while Still Life highlights the zigzag of the lines themselves. Lengths, proportions, and angles are carefully calculated to support the complex balance and interdependence of objects. The Phantom in the bottle confines these twists to specific images, making a simple container fuller and more blurry.
