Liu Sheng: Potato Man’s Quest

Potato Man’s Quest is a solo exhibition by the Mainland Chinese artist Liu Sheng, which through a series of evocative oil paintings on canvas, reveals the social reality he discovered as a potato farmer.

Liu has been a migrant worker for twenty years but has never stopped questioning the boundaries between art and society. In 2014, he no longer wanted to be a simple observer and began to record his daily encounters; his art was familiar and straightforward. Long-term social practice is not only a way for him to transcend his observation and perception and generate artistic expression in the common relationship with others, but also to expose critical issues in the existing system and catalyze social exchanges.

Farming is a way for artists to reconnect with their hometowns. Through manual labor, Liu becomes involved in the community and understands the complexities of rural life in China today, where family-run farmland faces the challenge of insufficient productivity. Liu explores rural families' intimate choices in the face of the larger forces of modernization, showing how these negotiations shaped the fabric of everyday rural life—from power structures, community superstitions, and individualism versus collectivism, to resource distribution and inequality.
