Ghosts of Empires

Ghosts of Empires is a group show that features the work of Hurvin Anderson, Adam de Boer, Delphine Desane, Theaster Gates, Jeanne F. Jalandoni, Chris Ofili, Fadekemi Ogunsanya, Maia Cruz Palileo, Miguel Angel Payano Jr., Paul Anthony Smith, Livien Yin and Zao Wou-Ki. The exhibition aims to explore the intersections, overlaps and dissonances between the Black Atlantic and Asian imperialist trade routes and brings together an extraordinary group of contemporary artists from the African and Asian diaspora.

The exhibition emphasizes that what history tells us these narratives are different and overlap. There are many communities that have been oppressed by colonization and imperialism, and yet they are able to thrive, create rich cultures, and develop important ideas. Key to the exhibition is an examination of how artists from the African and Asian diaspora dealt with the legacy of slavery, immigration, colonialism, sovereignty, trade, and contemporary imperialism.
