Andy Warhol’s Long Shadow

Andy Warhol’s Long Shadow continues cultural impact by juxtaposing the artist's important paintings, photographs, and films with the work of some of his contemporaries and successors.

Warhol's development of a new expressive style and his challenge to gender norms resonated with the thematic centrality of identity, glamor, and performance in Nan Goldin's photographs, including the opera-wearing figure in Ivy in Opera Gloves, Boston (1972). He often experimented with new artistic strategies and also used ghosting, masking, and recording techniques to reshape his public image.


In his Polaroid Self-Portrait in Fright Wig (1986),, he transformed his appearance by donning a silver wig and sunglasses, while also obscuring his face in shadow. Douglas Gordon's Self-Portrait of You + Me (2 pieces) Andy (2008) highlights an uneasy affinity for this approach, including a commercial reproduction of his self-portrait in a wig, the self-portrait was partially burned, split, and mounted on a mirror background. Dew by Urs Fischer (2023) employs post-Warhol strategies of appropriation and transformation of commercial images and paintings of Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from Warhol’s Athletes series, along with a Campbell’s soup can.
