Aki Sasamoto: Sounding Lines

Sounding Lines is a solo exhibition by the acclaimed New York-based artist Aki Sasamoto, which is between sculpture and performance featuring newly commissioned installations and performances in dialogue with recent moving image works.

Allegorical, anecdotal, and biographical elements often permeate her work, which explores the relationship between body and space, engaging the viewer on multiple sensory levels through stream-of-consciousness interactions. The newly commissioned installation waves will be sent through a system of metal springs suspended throughout the entire floor to initiate a choreography of catalytic movement.

The title of the exhibition alludes to the method of measuring the depth of a body of water using weighted lines. Extending this concept, the boundaries and interrelationships between people and their surroundings are explored, focusing on how these relationships define feelings of closeness or distance from the world at large. It captures a moment when the artist is immersed in a series of objects that momentarily float, scatter, and spin on a makeshift table with air holes made from a converted commercial kitchen sink.
