Zhang Hui: Natration: Action Poem

Narration: Action Poem is a solo exhibition by Mainland Chinese artist Zhang Hui @zhanghui2017, featuring works that do not pursue grand narratives but rather start from "human"—from observation, from questioning humanity.

In Zhang's creative practice, he collects images of various types, including art history, 3D modeling, and online resources. Like the "collection of characters" in Chinese calligraphy, he strings these images together to form a "node narrative." This narrative is not about telling a story but about establishing connections and arrangements. The fragments and scenes within are often closely related to his own experiences. These works inherit the solemnity of figurative painting while depicting individuals fragmented and compressed by social structures, who are transformed into exemplars of "examples." In a sense, we are all such "examples," trained, transformed, referenced, and even used as experimental subjects—like dissected human bodies.

This exploration also extends to the artist's "Happy New Year" series, with 3 large paintings from the series. Samuel Beckett’s play Oh les beaux jours (translated as Happy Days) had a profound influence on him. A similar approach is employed in these paintings, selecting a specific moment in a year, such as "that day", to represent the experience of the entire year. Structurally, he deliberately imbues these works with a greeting card-like visual texture. Greeting cards symbolize celebration and ritual; they abandon an obsession with realism, instead pursuing symbolic interpretation. The flatness of greeting cards grants the artist greater freedom to weave images more fluidly.
