The Real World

The Real World is a group exhibition that will feature paintings, sculptures, and installations from the 1990s and early 2000s by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Raymond Pettibon, Jason Rhoades, Diana Thater, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Lisa Yuskavage.

These works are an excellent look back twenty years ago when these artists emerged in New York and Los Angeles and became the backbone of the local art world. How they pursued their own unique artistic practices in a breakthrough and new way.

These artists create in different media, from traditional paintings to videos and installations. By incorporating non-traditional themes, forms and ideas into the composition and experience of the work, the artists critically re-evaluated these materials, challenging the relationship between art and daily life. In response to more and more social issues that have been oppressed or neglected for a long time, these artists have pioneered new ways of creation to discuss issues such as identity, gender, sex, consumerism, architecture, and the natural environment. The several artists in the exhibition have collaborated in the early days of Zwirner Gallery since its opening in 1993. They exhibited their pioneering and iconic works for the first time. Against the background of the current COVID-19 pandemic, their profound involvement in the social aspect of art-whether it is encouraging the active participation of the audience or using common language forms such as daily experience, objects and cultural references-appears particularly today. Relevant and essential.
