Tetsumi Kudo: Case

Case is a solo exhibition by the post-war Japanese artist Tetsumi Kudo, which showcases the human experience explored across a wide range of practices, questioning the proliferation of mass consumption and the rise of technology.

This exhibition combines a series of iconic cages produced by Kudo between 1966 and 1980. His work explores themes of colonialism, racism, social cohesion, and environmental degradation through biomorphic sculptures and assemblages incorporating found materials. The worlds created in these different environments aim to encourage viewers to understand themselves as part of a complete and complex universe in which nature, technology, and humans interact with each other, a system he calls a ”new ecology“.

The artist began studying cages in 1965 and continued to explore them over the next 15 years, his longest contact with one form or another. These works are significant because they incorporate everyday objects like birdcages, which integrate his assemblages into the domestic sphere. He fills their food and water dishes with pills instead of food like birdseed. These settings, perpetuate the idea that humans, like pets, are ”fed,“ observed, or controlled by larger organizational systems.
